CTP-4

Approach

Bright Kids contracted tutors have experience preparing students for the CTP-4 and understand what it takes to obtain a top score.

Our students go through an initial comprehensive diagnostic with one of our assessment specialists in order to best identify their strengths and areas for development. The assessment specialists produce a three to four page report recording the child’s performance and make recommendations for the best individual approach for tutoring your child. From there, a personalized curriculum is developed in order to compliment their strengths and support their weaknesses.

We carefully pair our clients with a contracted tutor who specializes in working with elementary-age children and can most effectively work with the student based on the recommendations of the assessment specialists. Our contracted tutors have many areas of expertise and we tap into that when pairing them with our students.

Tutoring can be completed 1-on-1 in your home or at our main office.  If you live outside of NYC, contact us for information regarding our online tutoring options.

About the test

Given by the ERB, the CTP-4 (Comprehensive Testing Program-4) is a measure of your child’s learning achievement. The CTP-4 is not a single test, but a series of assessments designed to provide information about student performance in key areas of school achievement. There are 7 categories being assessed when a child sits for the battery:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Writing Mechanics
  • Writing Concepts & Skills
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Mathematics

The results of these assessments can be used to compare knowledge obtained through curriculum to conceptual knowledge and reasoning ability. Schools then extrapolate achievement strengths and potential from the results of the battery.

Timing

The timeline for the test varies from school to school. Please speak with the admissions staff at the school to which you’re trying to gain entrance to or your current school’s staff to get an idea for when they suggest that your child sit for the battery.

FAQ

How is the CTP-4 scored?

The CTP-4 test typically provides both a stanine and a percentile rank for children. Children are compared with each other by grade level and not by age.

Does every independent school administer the CTP-4?

Most independent schools in New York City administer the test to track the progress of their students, but check with your school to be sure. The test is also given outside the city for entrance into some independent and Catholic schools.

How long of a time do I need to prepare for the test?

It depends on what grade level your child is in and his or her current math and reading skills. A CTP-4 diagnostic at Bright Kids is a good way to find out what skills your child needs to improve on to succeed with the exam.
